International study day Montaigne Humanities Doctoral School (UBM)

  • May 10, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., MSH Bordeaux, Salle Jean Borde

This scientific event proposes to address the question of ridicule in the art and literature of the Middle Ages, based on different types of stories and works, in order to explore its production, its staging, its objects, its aims, its rejections and its effects. It will also be a question of analyzing the relationship that these works or ridiculing passages have, on the one hand, with the world, and on the other hand, with art itself. If the related notions of the comic and the grotesque have been studied for a long time in medieval art, notably through laughter – thanks to the historian Jacques le Goff, for example – or the comic, in close relation with the tragic and seriousness – as the work of Élisabeth Lalou has shown – the question of ridicule remains little explored.
