As part of the MSH Bordeaux AAP 2022 Project: The Terrain in living arts: stories, methods, practices (ARTSTERRAIN) – Appel Blanc

In recent years, numerous research projects have been based on “field” work at the crossroads of the performing arts and the human and social sciences.
The field, as it is defined in anthropology and sociology, is both a method, a way of producing data, and a concrete experience which reflects the complexity of practices and lifestyles. The conference will question the place of the researcher, their positions and their commitment in the field.
Participant observation, observant participation, the objectification of participation, commitment and restitution methods will constitute the heart of the methodological reflection. Rituals and festive practices, spectacular practices, notably dance, circus and music, will thus be studied, as well as the question of areas under tension in several cultural areas (Asian, American, African and European). Furthermore, artists themselves sometimes draw inspiration from research in anthropology and/or sociology for their artistic work. Two main trends can be identified: on the one hand, the production of knowledge; on the other hand, creation based on “data from the field”, sometimes presented as research-creation. The relevance of the notion of “documentary dramaturgy” characterizing some of these practices will also be questioned.

Furthermore, in connection with the conference, on October 20, 2022 at 6 p.m. the Arise by the Mandragore company will take place in the performance hall of the Maison des Arts (see presentation: https://www.u-bordeaux-montaigne. fr/fr/actualites/culture/arise.html ), supported by the Culture Department of Bordeaux-Montaigne University. An exhibition “Les Figures de l’errance” around the show Arise , proposed by Corinne Mathou, will be visible at the Espace Alban Denuit, at the Maison des Arts, on October 20 and 21.
