The Maison des Sciences de l'Homme de Bordeaux (MSHBx) is opening the first edition of its Thesis Prize aimed at distinguishing research work of an interdisciplinary nature supported in one of the Bordeaux doctoral schools in SHS.

This prize aims to reward research of an interdisciplinary nature supported within the framework of a Bordeaux doctoral school in human and social sciences. A “First Prize” and possibly a “Special Mention” will be awarded in the form of scholarships and will be used to support and promote the winners and their work.

Will be considered interdisciplinary:

  • any research work falling within one of the scientific axes of the MSHBx;
  • any research work relating to several disciplines including at least one in SHS or 2 axes as defined by the ANR in its generic AAP[1].

This 2023 Prize is open to theses defended between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022.

An ad hoc jury will be composed of members of the MSH Bx CS and representatives of the doctoral schools of the Bordeaux site.


Applications open: May 2023

Deadline for submission of applications: Monday June 19, 2023 at midnight French time.

The results will be communicated on October 16, 2023 .

The awards ceremony will take place before December 22, 2023 .

Rules – Thesis Prize from the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme de Bordeaux

Article 1 – Purpose of the prize

The Maison des Sciences de l'Homme de Bordeaux (MSHBx) opens on May 1 , 2023 the first edition of its Thesis Prize aimed at rewarding interdisciplinary research work supported in a Bordeaux establishment.
A “First Prize” and possibly a “Special Mention” will be awarded.
The jury will have as main assessment criteria:
– the scientific quality of the thesis (intellectual rigor, originality, problematization) as well as the quality of the writing (clarity, fluidity);
– the connection of the thesis in relation to the Axes of the MSHBx ( https://www.mshbx.fr/les-axes-de-recherche/ );

– the interdisciplinarity of doctoral work, taking into account at least one or more disciplines including at least one in SHS or 2 axes as defined by the ANR in its generic AAP[2].

Article 2 – Periodicity and conditions

The MSHBx Thesis Prize is awarded every year and can be entered by doctors who have defended during the calendar year preceding the year in which the Prize is awarded.
For the 2023 edition, the thesis must have been defended between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022.
This prize is advertised through the MSHBx as part of an annual call for applications.
Deadline for submitting applications: Friday June 19, 2023 at midnight French time.
The results will be communicated on October 16, 2023.
The awards ceremony will take place before December 22, 2023.

Article 3 – Endowment

The jury will establish a ranking of the candidates and will designate the candidate for the Thesis Prize who will be awarded a scholarship of 2,000 euros for the “First Prize” and a scholarship of 1,000 euros for a “Special Mention” if the jury considers it relevant.
These sums are financed by the MSHBx and are intended to support the promotion of the doctor's research work.

Article 4 – Awarding of prizes

The winners will be notified by email to the address used when sending their application ( prix-these-mshbx@services.cnrs.fr ).
They will be invited to receive their prize before December 22, 2023 within the MSHBx and undertake to be present to present their work during this ceremony.

Article 5 – Role and composition of the jury

The Thesis Prize jury examines the application files and selects the candidates to be awarded the Thesis Prize.
An ad hoc jury will be composed of members of the MSHBx CS and representatives of the doctoral schools on the Bordeaux site.
The jury will decide on the files and manuscripts received according to the conditions defined in article 1. The jury is sovereign and its decisions will be final.

Article 6 – Application conditions

In application of these regulations, the theses concerned by the 2023 Thesis Prize are those defended between January 1 , 2022 and December 31, 2022.
It is only possible to apply once for the prize.
The application file must include:

  1. Completed information sheet
  2. One-page argument (4,600 characters, including spaces) to underline and explain the interdisciplinary nature of the thesis (see Information sheet)
  3. Personal application letter
  4. Detailed CV presenting scientific activities
  5. Copy of the thesis diploma or certificate of defense
  6. Summary of the thesis between 15,000 and 20,000 characters including spaces
  7. Copy of the defense report
  8. The full version of the thesis in electronic format

Article 7 – Terms of deposit

The submission must be announced by email to : prix-these-mshbx@services.cnrs.fr no later than Friday June 19, 2023 at midnight .
The documents submitted must include a number as a prefix to the file according to the tree structure indicated in article 6; be sure to use the same submitter and file names in case of file replacement.

Article 8 – Transfers of reproduction and adaptation rights

Applicants graciously authorize MSHBx to use their image, titles and abstracts provided for publication on various printed and digital communication media. In return, the MSHBx undertakes to explicitly mention the names of the candidates.

Article 9 – Responsibilities

Applicants are entirely responsible for the content of their manuscript.
The MSHBx cannot be held responsible if, following an event of force majeure, the Thesis Prize has to be cancelled, postponed or modified; as well as any loss, delay or damage in the delivery of products.

Article 10 – Final provisions

Participation in the Thesis Prize implies acceptance of these regulations, which can be consulted on the MSHBx website: https://www.mshbx.fr/prix-de-these-msh-bordeaux/
The Prize cannot be exchanged and will not be the subject of any negotiation or consideration.
These regulations are published on the MSHBx website.
Failure to comply with the terms of these regulations will result in disqualification of the candidate(s).
MSHBx cannot be held responsible if, in the event of force majeure or unforeseen events, this competition has to be canceled, postponed or modified. This provision includes failure to fund the event and/or insufficient number of applications.
